2011 Accomplishments In South America

Our Ecuadorian partnerships continue to draw on the strengths of indigenous and modern worldviews to create a just, sustainable and fulfilling future for the human family.

Rights of Nature Expands in Ecuador and Globally

In Ecuador, Fundación Pachamama implemented a strategy of public awareness and legal training to ensure enforcement of Rights of Nature as outlined in the 2008 Constitution, with several early successes. Fundación Pachamama was unanimously elected to serve as president of an important network of Ecuadorian environmental organizations that monitor issues such as deforestation and mining impacts and use political organizing and lobbying to protect rights of the environment. Globally, Pachamama hosted the second meeting of the Global Alliance for Rights of Nature, and participated in a UN General Assembly dialogue on Rights of Nature.

Workshops Build Collective Rights Defense Against Oil Development

Facing the Ecuadorian government’s recently announced plans to widen the oil frontier to new, relatively untouched regions of the Amazon, Pachamama organized workshops to improve the capacities of indigenous peoples to defend their collective rights.

Complementary Currency Network Garners Cross-Sector Praise

A complementary currency network was created among a group of credit cooperatives providing a local source of payment, and was well received by communities, businesses, and Ecuador’s Ministry of Economic Policy Coordination as a strategy to promote local consumption, production, and recirculation of resources.

Achuar Communities Improve Access to Clean Water

The Jungle Mamas project has expanded both its geographic reach and its activities, evolving into a comprehensive community health and sanitation initiative. One example was the installation of compost toilets in two Achuar communities to prevent soil and water contamination. This project improves access to clean drinking water, reducing infant and child mortality rates and improving general community health.

Innovations Take Rainforest Projects to New Level of Sustainability

Fish farming projects along the Pastaza River began using local fish species rather than those grown and brought in from laboratories. The project expanded to a total of 16 communities and 152 pools. Near the Kapawi Eco-Lodge, an Achuar community installed a permaculture garden with the goal of selling excess produce to the lodge, one of the first pilot projects of a sustainability plan to reduce the lodge’s impact.

Sarayaku Case Brings Free, Prior, and Informed Consent to the Fore

Pachamama has provided integral support and legal counsel for the human rights case of the Kichwa community of Sarayaku since 2003. The final hearing was held in June 2011, and a verdict will be issued soon that could set new precedents for the right to free, prior and informed consent of communities affected by oil projects.

2011 Accomplishments Around the World

We expanded our offerings of transformational experiences to generate a critical mass of people everywhere who are committed to a just, thriving, and sustainable world.

Awakening the Dreamer Message Reaches 60 Countries

Our flagship workshop, the Awakening the Dreamer Symposium, has now been delivered in 60 countries and 13 languages, thanks to 3,500 trained facilitators worldwide who are bringing the message to their communities in places as diverse as Haiti, Israel and Iran.

Digital Tools Bring Symposium to New Audiences

Awakening the Dreamer is poised to reach significantly more people with the development of new distribution channels. Through a joint partnership, Gaiam, Inc., a leading producer of lifestyle media, released the symposium message as a DVD and as an online experience.

Core Content Updated and Expanded

A new version of the Symposium was released, with updated content that reflects a deeper focus on social justice. A new post-symposium workshop was also created for participants who wish to continue exploring their unique role in transforming the world.

Generation Waking Up Cultivates the Next Generation of Visionary Leaders

The youth partner initiative of Awakening the Dreamer, Generation Waking Up,  is on track to reach 5,000 young people around the world this year, including 200 facilitators in at least 12 countries.

Pachamama Journeys Brings in New Leaders and Allies

Over 240 people participated in a transformational Pachamama Journey to Ecuador supporting indigenous-owned projects and intercultural exchange. Ten members of our extended community joined us on the first Allies Journey, aimed at deepening our collective, ongoing commitment to social justice work. We also trained eight new Journey leaders, enabling expansion of this program. And groundwork is currently taking place for future Journeys in the global north.

Possible Futures Film Festival Engages People in a Global Vision

The intention of the Possible Futures Film Festival is to engage people around the world in creating positive visions for our shared future. Its first year resulted in filmmakers from 44 countries submitting 400 inspiring films, and over 14,000 members of our global community voting to select five of the seven award winners.

FOUR YEARS. GO. Campaign Accelerates Spread of Message

After creating and incubating the FOUR YEARS. GO. campaign, Pachamama Alliance has now set up a separate entity, 4YG, LLC, a social mission for-profit organization working to accelerate this shift in the world. The Pachamama Alliance is operating completely within the context of this critical message, and holds a significant financial interest in 4YG, LLC.
