No innovation in 200 years has saved more lives than the toilet. But 2.6 billion people still don’t have a safe, affordable way to have a bowel movement. That’s four out of every 10 people worldwide that don’t have a safe way to poop. We need new ideas to help reduce disease and find new ways to turn feces into resources like fuel, fertilizer, and fresh water.

The Pachamama Alliance’s 2011 spring fundraiser raised money for the Jungle Mamas compost toilets project, which installed 20 composting toilets in 3 Achuar communities. Composting toilets are a great way to help bring sanitation to communities that lack sewage systems.
