Changing the Game: Pachamama Receives $1 Million Challenge Grant Early this year, The Pachamama Alliance received a
momentous challenge grant in the amount of $1 million from an anonymous
donor. This individual sees the profound importance of The Pachamama
Alliance mission and the great impact of the work we are doing all over
the world. This challenge grant presents an unprecedented opportunity to
accelerate the work of the Pachamama Alliance. In order to receive the
full $1 million dollars we need to match those funds by raising an
additional $1 million dollars.
Recently, we celebrated our first
milestone – we reached the first $500,000 in order to receive payment
for the first half of the grant. We want to thank all of our donors for
their contribution to this achievement. By making your Stewardship
Circle payment early, being a monthly contributor, making a new one-time
gift, or committing to a new pledge, you have helped to increase the
pace by which we can accomplish our strategic objectives for this year,
and we thank you. We are now working to generate the second $500,000 in
revenue by June 30th to receive the remainder of the grant.
This challenge
grant is an exceptional acknowledgment of the leadership that The
Pachamama Alliance and its dedicated community of donor-activists are
providing in the world. It is also an extraordinary invitation to expand
this leadership — an opportunity for all of us to act boldly and with
urgency to address the most pressing issues of our time by inviting
ourselves and others to rise to this challenge with a financial
contribution — all gifts will be matched dollar for dollar up to $1
million dollars.
If you would like to make an additional gift to
help meet this challenge, please click here. It is through the commitment of
each and every donor, facilitator, volunteer, and supporter over the
years that brought The Pachamama Alliance to this place of recognition,
and continues to bring forth this work. Thank you for your partnership.
This
challenge grant and your continued support allow The Pachamama Alliance
to enact our key strategic initiatives for 2010: • Awakening the
Dreamer:
Dramatic acceleration of waking people up to the challenges and
opportunities before us through the Awakening the Dreamer Initiative,
with a focus on youth and people of all generations throughout the
globe. • FOUR YEARS. GO.: Linking together individuals and organizations to
generate demonstrable action and a structure for achieving it through
the continued roll out of this collaborative campaign, FOUR YEARS. GO. •
Rainforest protection:Continuing our
precedent-setting work in rainforest and cultural preservation with
indigenous partners throughout the Amazon basin, as well as expanding
Rights for Nature into constitutions through the Andean Community of
Nations.

What is the Message of the Gulf Coast Oil Spill?
The recent oil spill in the gulf coast is on track to become the largest oil spill in the history of the United States and perhaps one of the largest environmental disasters ever. We want to hear from you: What is the message of the Gulf coast oil spill? The FOUR YEARS. GO. campaign has initiated a weekly “question of the week” in its blog, to hear your thoughts about key environmental and social justice issues in the news, such as this one, and what is possible for the future of humanity in the next four years.
Engage with these conversations here!
A Life-Affirming Message from Jungle Mamas A Jungle Mamas team led by founder and director, Margaret Love, just returned from the most successful training ever of Achuar birth attendants, held in the Pumpuentsa community deep in the Ecuador rainforest. During the training, participants announced the official name of the program in Achuar: “Ikiama Nukuri”, or “Women of the Forest”.
The purpose of Jungle Mamas is to empower the indigenous women and communities of the Ecuadorian rainforest to ensure safe birthing, and the health and wellbeing of the Achuar. The Jungle Mamas never imagined that by working with the Achuar to improve the safety of their births, they would so readily see the benefits of having trained birth attendants at every birth. The majority of births are now attended by program participants, and this has already resulted in stronger, happier mothers and babies, with positive outcomes for complicated births as well.
The April 2010 training brought a new focus on prevention versus waiting to act in an emergency, while at the same time upgrading participants’ ability to deal with emergencies. Through the use of participatory techniques such as role playing, demonstration, and song, the team taught practical skills for handling some of the most common and preventable, life-threatening health problems of babies and young children, especially diarrhea and dehydration. Participants commented that they could not have been happier than being taught by Yeshi Neumann, a midwife and grandmother from California with 40 years of experience. With the practical, hands-on training methods and relevant content, the 11 participants now feel empowered to make fundamental, life-sustaining change and are eager to learn more.
Launching Clean Water and Sanitation Projects in the Rainforest
Our Achuar partners have become highly aware of the direct link between environmental issues and the effects on the quality of life and basic health, particularly their most vulnerable population—children and babies. Two communities have chosen to partner with Jungle Mamas (see above article) on treatment of water as a top health-related priority, thus launching the clean water and sanitation projects this year. Several community meetings and educational workshops have been held to determine the best strategies to take on this priority, including building a pilot ecological dry toilet and rainwater encatchment systems, and they are now closer than ever to making potable water available to everyone.
2010 has been a watershed year for the Awakening the Dreamer (ATD) Initiative and its work with young people. We have looked deeply into how the Initiative can best support the Millennial Generation to make their greatest contribution, and have decided to partner with Generation Waking Up, through the work of two young colleagues, Zo Tobi and Joshua Gorman.
Zo trained to deliver the Awakening The Dreamer Symposium, brought it to thousands of young people in his work as a youth organizer in the Sierra Club Student Coalition, and has continued to be deeply inspired by it. Joshua has been holding a vision for the role of his generation for several years and has been developing that vision through the creation of an organization called Generation Waking Up. Now Awakening The Dreamer is seeing that the most powerful way that ATD can reach and inspire today’s youth is through a partnership with Generation Waking Up (GenUp for short).
The mission of Generation Waking Up is to ignite a generation-wide movement of young people helping to bring forth a thriving, just, sustainable world. In service to our mission, they strive to:
- Awaken in young people a clear sense of identity and purpose within the story of our generation’s coming of age at this turning point in human history.
- Empower young people with the training, mentoring, and support they need to thrive as global citizens, leaders, and change agents in the 21st century.
- Connect youth-based social change efforts across issues, geography, and all lines of difference, unleashing the collaborative power and collective action of today’s younger generations.
The ATD team is now hard at work establishing this partnership and finalizing GenUp’s plan for 2010 and beyond. Expect to see more about this in the near future.

Go Green to Beat the Blues
Did you know that recent studies have shown that just five minutes of fresh air and exercise, no matter how moderate, makes a huge difference in mood and even self-esteem? For an even bigger effect, add water, such as a lake or river. “Green exercise"- walking, gardening, cycling, fishing, boating, horse-riding and farming in locations such as a park, garden or nature trail is most effective for stressed or inactive people.
