In 2004, when Leah and Chuck Fisher joined a Pachamama group led by Bill and Lynne Twist to meet the Achuar people, they had no idea that they would return to the rainforest again and again, but for the past decade, the jungle has continued to call this couple back.
Chuck, a psychoanalyst, became fascinated with the Achuar culture that values and lives by its dreams. And Leah, a relationship psychotherapist, was intrigued by the gender roles, family constellations and health issues among the Achuar.
Chuck and his colleague, Beth Kalish Weiss, are engaged in an ongoing exploration of the Achuar dream culture. They are learning from Achuar leaders about traditional and evolving ways of interpreting and using dreams, and about the changes in the content of the Achuar’s dreams as their culture has increasing contact with the modern world. Chuck has gone on to explore the use of dreams in healing practices throughout the world, and he and Beth give thought-provoking presentations to professional groups around the globe.
In May 2013, Leah participated in the first ever Achuar Eye Project. With generous support from the Pachamama Alliance, she worked with Daniel Koupermann and others to assemble a team of Peruvian and American eye surgeons. Leah served as fundraiser, photographer and chronicler on the May expedition that provided eye care to an Achuar population located in a remote area of Peruvian rainforest. To their surprise, the doctors discovered a mysterious illness affecting 60% of the rainforest populations they examined.
Come and learn more about their remarkable discovery.
Guest will enjoy photographs and video from Leah and Chuck’s journeys into Achuar territory, and will hear stories of the intrepid couple’s dramatic findings in the rainforest.
