April Monthly Gathering: Stories from “The Holy Universe” with David Christopher

April 9, 2013 7:00 pm - April 9, 2013 9:00 pm

Address: 1630 Powell Street, San Francisco, CA, United States, 94133

David Christopher, author of "The Holy Universe"
Many have left the faiths of our forebears, unable to reconcile the stories and myths of the ages with the age of Reason. Yet our souls need more than the facts of science alone—we lost much when we abandoned our stories. Our faith in Reason, while bringing us technological brilliance, has also brought us ecological, social, and spiritual crises.

David Christopher, in his book The Holy Universe: a New Story of Creation for the Heart, Soul and Spirit, takes what science has learned about who we are and where we came from and tells a new story filled with metaphor and meaning. At our April Monthly Gathering, he will:

  • present highlights from the book,
  • discuss how this evolutionary story might guide us through these trying times, and
  • explore why the social, ecological, spiritual crises of the Great Transformation might be the best thing to ever happen to humanity.

More About the Book: The Holy Universe

The Holy Universe is written in part for the growing population of us who call ourselves “spiritual but not religious.” It also speaks to those who were raised in Western traditions but seek a relevant and heartfelt story of our place in the Universe that embraces the science of the modern world.

The narrative is revealed through a dialogue between a Seeker and his Sage, who weaves a heart-felt story of creation through the Beginning of All Beginnings, the creation of Earth and the Web of Life, and the story of humanity, all the way to our present-day global crises, or, as the Sage calls it, the “Great Transformation.”

The book has been endorsed by Angeles Arrien, John Robbins, Julia Butterfly Hill, Vicki Robin, Paul Ray, John Perkins, and others. For more information, see: www.theholyuniverse.com.

More About David Christopher

More than fifteen years ago, David Christopher became intrigued with the “new story” that integrates the science of the 20th and 21st centuries with a spiritual sensibility toward the creation of the Universe. As he moved away from his years as a corporate trainer, airline pilot, and flight instructor, he immersed himself in the works of Brian Swimme, Thomas Berry, and Miriam MacGillis as well as those of David Christian (one of the founders of “Big History”), and became a facilitator for the “Awakening the Dreamer Symposium,” which features this new story.

But as he dove deeper into this new worldview, this new story, he felt something missing. He missed the poetry. He missed the lyricism of the liturgy and the scriptures. He wanted more. He wanted a story that also felt like the story given to him in his youth, which led him to write The Holy Universe, which is a synthesis of the many ideas and experiences he as learned and taught over many years, from working for environmental and social justice organizations, to living in intentional community and his lessons from the teachers in his own life.

When he’s not writing, he works as the Financial Manager for his family’s consulting company. Formerly, David was the Vice President of Finance for a software startup and a teacher of Vicki Robin’s best-selling Your Money or Your Life program. He has also lead training programs for Managed Health Network, Sacramento City School District, County of Contra Costa, Oracle Corporation and others.

David lives in Northern California and enjoys hiking, dancing, and recharging at home when not roaming around the country.
